NZLocums is the only organisation in the country that provides a comprehensive orientation course tailor-made for internationally trained doctors who are coming to work in NZ. The course is held in the NZLocums office in central Wellington and is usually for three days. We encourage all doctors who are coming to work in NZ from overseas to arrive in time to attend the course before starting work. We currently run the orientation course once a month.
The orientation course includes presentations on most aspects of General Practice in New Zealand. The selection of topics covered includes:
- an introduction to General Practice in New Zealand
- a session with a representative from the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) to advise you on your individual tax circumstances
- Payment/invoicing processes for locums and overview of contracts
- Maori and Pacific Island Health/Culturalism in New Zealand
- ACC (New Zealand's no-fault accident cover for all New Zealanders)
- WINZ (Work and Income NZ) - What is WINZ and how does this system affect a GP?
- PHARMAC (Pharmaceutical Management Agency of NZ)
- A resuscitation workshop (dependant on number of attendees)
If you are bringing your family with you, NZLocums will arrange for you to stay together in the accommodation we provide during the course.
There are many things in Wellington to entertain your family whilst you are attending the course - all located within a short stroll from your hotel:
Te Papa, NZ's national museum
The Museum of Wellington City and Sea
Wellington's Botanical Gardens
Current and upcoming special attractions
Orientation to a new practice
Once you arrive at a new practice, it is expected that you will receive a practice-specific orientation to get to know the local set up and team.
