Working as a roving locum in Rural New Zealand

Whether you are a New Zealand registered GP interested in working with us, or you are currently overseas and want to find out more about working as a roving locum with NZLocums in rural New Zealand, we'd love to hear from you.

Working as a Roving Locum provides you with an opportunity to travel and experience life in different locations and communities throughout New Zealand. It also offers you the flexibility to work when you want to; allowing you time to enjoy the best New Zealand life has to offer.

There are about 220 rural general (family) practices in New Zealand. They can be found in small towns close to major rural centres or in remote settlements located in the most beautiful places in New Zealand, with mountains, beaches, lakes or rivers at the doorstep.

What NZLocums has to offer:

NZLocums is a not-for-profit service specifically for rural communities in New Zealand. Unlike normal recruitment agencies, NZLocums is funded by the Government to ensure rural New Zealanders have access to quality health care; therefore we don’t charge a fee to either the practice or the locum for our recruitment services.

We can offer you information on:

  • Current and up and coming vacancies
  • Information on local conditions, the surrounding areas and the local community
  • The Medical Council registration process
  • Immigration procedures and requirements
  • And much more!

We work in partnership with practice managers, partners and the decision makers of rural practices all over New Zealand to find suitably qualified medical staff. We are well placed to have the best first-hand knowledge of most of the positions available nationwide.

We also only have a three month (12 week) minimum requirement to work as a locum; most other agencies have a six month minimum.  NZLocums also provides a unique three day orientation programme so that doctors can hit the ground running when they arrive at the practice.
