There are plenty of outstanding walks and panoramic coastal views if you visit the Whangarei Heads and the Bream Head Scenic Reserve.  Or head for the summit of Mount Parahaki, the highest point in the city. It was once the site of the largest Maori Pa (fortified village) in New Zealand.

There are a selection of coeducational schools and a university in the area. Whangarei is also home to the Northland Taniwha rugby union team, a professional side competing in the ITM Cup, the highest level of provincial rugby in New Zealand.
