Waiuku Medical Centre is a rural general practice situated in purpose built premises, which include laboratory services. It is a friendly practice with a good relationship between doctors and staff. The next medical practice is a 15-minute drive away. Waiuku is an affluent, active, and growing town, 60km from the centre of Auckland, and 45km from Auckland Airport.
Increasing population growth means that they have commenced the planning for a new larger medical centre, which will contain a full range of health services including physiotherapy, pharmacy, and laboratory etc. A move should occur in about a year’s time, and will give them the space and working conditions they need.
Currently the practice has a patient register of about 9,500, this is expanding steadily as this area grows in population. The practice provides services to two rest homes (70 beds), and staff the local Franklin Memorial Hospital, an 18 bed geriatric public hospital run by Counties Manukau District Health Board. This hospital gives us admitting advantages for simple socio-medical conditions, and the ability to provide Hospice care for their own patients.
Waiuku Medical Centre currently have seven GPs working full/part-time (five FTE). They are supported by five Practice Nurses (usually three consulting daily), five Receptionists and a Practice Manager. Ideally we need six full time equivalent GPs. They work closely with the Local Hospital Nurses, District Nurses, Childcare Nurse, and other branches of their strong and close-knit community. They have a visiting Diabetic Nurse And Dietician. A private Orthopaedic Surgeon sees patients at the Practice. The Practice regularly teach fourth year and final year students from Auckland Medical School on their rural GP attachments
Surgery Hours are 8.30am to 7.00pm weekdays, with doctor’s surgeries from 9.00am to 12.15pm, and 2.00pm to 4.45pm. There can be one evening surgery from 4.00pm to 7.00pm for the on call doctor. Currently the on call roster for nights and weekends is 1:6, there is no on call after 10.00pm. The practice is affiliated to the Procare Manukau PHO, and is fully computerised using Medtech 32 software.
The Base Hospital in Middlemore is 50km away from the practice. There is a local ambulance service, with Paramedic backup 20 minutes away.
Waiuku Medical Centre is seeking a GP to join their team as a replacement for a retiring GP, working eight sessions per week. He or she can join the team as an assistant with a view to partnership. The practice partners can provide medical oversight for NZMC purposes.
