Waiuku Medical Centre is seeking a GP to join their team as an assistant with a view to partnership.
Waiuku, in the Franklin District, has all the benefits of a rural lifestyle but is only 45 minutes drive from central of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. The gateway to the rugged and beautiful Awhitu Peninsula, it is surrounded by green, rolling farmland with wild coastline and peaceful harbour bays in close proximity. An increasing number of people, particularly artists and craftspeople, are finding the scenery too much to resist, while others are attracted to the outdoor lifestyle and opt to commute to Auckland for work.
Waiuku is an historic town dating back to pre-European times, when it was a busy port lying between the Waikato River and Manukau Harbour. Over time, the district became a thriving rural centre in its own right, with a wide range of pastoral and horticultural farming and more recently vineyards. Many of the town’s early buildings, including reputedly New Zealand’s earliest hotel, have been preserved and are still in use today. Visitors can follow a heritage trail through the town and relive the past at the pioneer museum, or travel on a restored steam train. The areas population is around 15,000 people .
Not surprisingly, water activities feature predominantly in the range of activities on offer. Swimming, sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and fishing (either in the sea or in one of three local freshwater lakes) are popular pass times. Even local golf courses have spectacular sea views. A mild climate, with average daily temperatures in the mid-twenties during summer and mid-teens during winter, means the outdoor activities, including the many local sports clubs, can be enjoyed year-round.
Waiuku is well-served for shops and services and locally-grown fruit and vegetables can be purchased at source. Most religious denominations are represented and the district has several pre-schools, 10 Primary and one High School – Waiuku College. There are also several private schools close to Waiuku. Its close proximity to Auckland gives easy access to New Zealand’s most comprehensive range of shopping and cultural facilities, as well as numerous options for tertiary study. Included is The University of Auckland, which incorporates a Medical School.
