Waimate Medical Centre, one of two local practices, is owned by the Waimate District Council. The rented premises are purpose-built and include two doctor’s rooms, two treatment rooms, reception, practice manager’s office, staff room, nurse’s office and spare consulting room.
The practice is equipped for minor surgery.
Waimate Medical Centre is seeking a full time permanent General Practitioner. Comprehensive support within the practice comes from three rural nurses and a senior District Nurse is also based locally. The town also has two physiotherapists.
The practice has 2250 patients within its coastal and hill country boundaries and provides additional services to a local rest home. Surgery hours are 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, with doctors’ hours 9.00am – 12 noon and 1.30pm to 5.15pm and phone contact in between. There is an after hours triage answering service that filters all after hours calls. The practice is fully computerised, using the Medtech 32 computerised patient management system, and is a member of the Aoraki Pimary Health Organisation (PHO), receiving capitated patient subsidies for non-accident care.
The closest base hospital is Timaru, 44 kilometres away. Waimate has a full time paramedic (Monday – Friday, volunteer at other times) and an ambulance can be at the practice within five minutes of being called. Timaru Hospital, which is owned and operated by South Canterbury District Health Board, is a 24 hour general hospital with 133 beds. It has recently been completely remodelled.
