Waimate is characterised by beautiful gardens
Waimate is a small, picturesque town serving a productive agricultural area. The town’s population is around 3,000, with a further 5,000 in the district, which is bordered by the Waitaki River in the South, the Pareroa River in the north and the Hakataramea River to the west. The town, which is characterised by Edwardian buildings, wide main streets and numerous trees, is just 10 minutes inland from the South Canterbury Coast, and State Highway 1. It boasts about 50 shops in the town, providing a broad range of shops and services.
In addition to pastoral, cropping, dairy farming, fruit and vegetable growing, local industries include furniture manufacturing, forestry and vegetable processing. The town is becoming increasingly popular as a stopover for tourists and has a full range of quality accommodation options. The Waimate District Council also operates four large campsites along the shores of Lake Aviemore, which are popular with people who enjoy spending time in and around water. There are several walks and mountain bike trails around Waimate, which reward the walker with native bush and birds and spectacular views, and the town holds numerous local events, such as the South Canterbury Busking Festival and Waimate Strawberry Fare, an annual celebration of local products. Television commercials and nature programmes are regularly filmed in the region.
A unique feature of the district is Waimate’s large wallaby population. These Australian marsupials were introduced to the area in the late 1880s, and now number thousands. Year-round wallaby hunting is popular with many residents and visitors and fishing in local rivers is excellent. Local animal parks appeal to younger children.
Waimate District is well-situated in central South Island. Within a three hour drive are lakes and mountains (including Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain), river and sea fishing, seven ski fields, and Queenstown, the four season alpine lake resort that offers year round action-packed thrill. The popular coastal South Canterbury swimming beach of Caroline Bay can be reached within 30 minutes drive from Waimate. Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island, is 150 minutes’ drive and Dunedin, 120 minutes.
Waimate offers many recreational activities in an environment so picturesque it regularly attracts television crews
