Oneroa Accident and Medical Centre on idyllic Waiheke Island has a part time (0.5-0.6 FTE) vacancy for a General Practitioner on salary or contracted, to work between the centre and the Piritahi Hau Ora clinic situated on the shores of Blackpool.
Waiheke Island is regarded by many as the ultimate lifestyle choice. At 19.3 kilometres by 9.4 kilometres it is the second largest island in the Hauraki Gulf, which comprises more than 65 islands in a sheltered environment ideal for recreational pursuits. Situated just 17 kilometres off the coast of Auckland, Waiheke boasts stunning white and golden sands beaches, rocky foreshores, lush subtropical forest and estuaries rich in native bird life. Waiheke’s coastline is 133.5 km, including 40 km of beaches, and approximately 2000 acres under public ownership. With an area of 92 square kilometres, it is about the size of Singapore, but has a permanent population of around 7,500.
Waiheke Island is the most accessible of the Hauraki Gulf islands. A regular ferry service connects it with Downtown Auckland and the approximately 35 minute trip is characterised by panoramic views of the city, Rangitoto and other islands of the Gulf. There are flights to and from Waiheke to other parts of the country and bus, taxi and shuttle services on the island complement the use of private car and boat.
Residential areas on Waiheke Island are typically small village settings each with own character and the lifestyle is decidedly laid back. A large number of residences are holiday homes. The island has made a name for itself as a haven for artists, writers and craftspeople and its Mediterranean type of climate is ideal for wine and olive production. Waiheke Island produces international award-winning wines and wine production – particularly Cabernet and Merlot blends - is one of the fastest growing industries on the island. With more than 30 boutique vineyards, enjoying alfresco lunches amongst the vines and olive groves is becoming an increasingly popular pastime for locals and visitors.
Over summer Waiheke has a high number of sunshine hours and mild winters, meaning outdoor activities can be enjoyed year round. There are several sandy beaches on the island that are great for swimming or just relaxing as well as numerous magnificent walkways. Kayaking, horse riding, cycling and sailing are popular activities. A popular summer destination for New Zealand travellers and a number from overseas, the population swells to over 30,000 in summer.
Almost every service required is obtainable on Waiheke Island, including a range of shops, eight preschool centres, two primary schools and high school (Waiheke High School). There are various public sports fields, tennis courts, golf course and seven churches. Oneroa Village is a main shopping area, with a full range of bank’s and the island’s Post Office.
Waiheke Island’s close proximity to Auckland gives easy access to New Zealand’s most comprehensive range of shopping and cultural facilities, as well as numerous options for tertiary study. Included is The University of Auckland, which incorporates a Medical School.
