Oneroa Accident and Medical Centre

Piritahi Hau Ora Trust and Te Korowai Hauora O Hauraki Trust own and manage the medical centre as a limited liability company, and provide medical services to the nearby Piritahi Clinic 0.5 km away. An additional medical centre operates at Ostend and on-call arrangements are shared with this practice. Approximately 18 percent of Waiheke Island’s population is Maori (80 percent European) and the Trusts’ purpose is to ensure that local health care reflects the needs of its population.

Oneroa Accident & Medical Centre is situated close to Oneroa Beach, a picturesque and popular swimming and recreational location. The Medical Centre has three consulting rooms, two treatment rooms, waiting room and reception area. In addition to two part time salaried General Practitioners and one part time independent General Practitioners who works from the site and participated in the after hours roster but does not attend the Piritahi Hau Ora Clinic.

The General Practitioners are supported by three experienced rural nurses, with qualifications in smear taking, vaccination and Primary Response in Medical Emergency (PRIME). The centre is well-equipped and numerous surgical instruments and examination tools are shared between the two sites.

Surgery hours at Oneroa Accident & Medical Centre are 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday, and 9.00am to 1.00pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Piritahi Hau Ora Clinic. After hours on call is shared with Ostend Medical Centre and all calls are first triaged by an external telephone triage provider. Oneroa Accident & Medical Centre undertakes Wednesday and Thursday on call, and Ostend Monday and Tuesday. Friday evenings are covered by a nominated General Practitioner at each practice and the two medical centres provide weekend cover for two consecutive weekends each. Oneroa Accident & Medical Centre also provides external services to a 27-bed rest home.

The practice uses the MedTech 32 computerised patient management system and is affiliated to the Tikapa Moana Primary Health Organisation (PHO), receiving capitated patient subsidies available for PHO-affiliates.

There is no hospital on Waiheke Island. The nearest base hospital is Auckland City Hospital and Starship Children’s hospital, 27 kilometres away. This can be reached by ambulance (one hour) or emergency helicopter (15 minutes). Ambulance services, including paramedic level, are available in Ostend together with basic radiology services. Laboratory services are available in Oneroa with pharmaceutical services provided at both Oneroa and Ostend.

A part time General Practitioner is required to start as soon as possible. Core hours are 20 per week, and the successful candidate must be prepared to work additional hours when needed to cover colleagues on leave. The position may be salaried to include provision for annual, sick leave and study leave, or as a contracted role. Terms and conditions of employment/contract are negotiable.
