Positions have arisen for two General Practitioners to join our experienced, fun loving ‘Pihanga Health’ team in Turangi.
Turangi is a modern town on the banks of the Tongariro River, at the southern end of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake. It was built by the Ministry of Works in the mid-1960s to house thousands of workers employed on the Tongariro Power Development. Today it has a population of 4,300 and growing. That the town has retained its popularity is a reflection of all the region has to offer and the quality of the infrastructure in place to support it.
From Turangi one can go fishing, hunting, mountain biking, hiking, white water rafting, kayaking, golfing, climbing, horse trekking, skiing, boating, flying or sight seeing. Being inland, summers are warm and winters can be cold – the perfect excuse to soak in a naturally heated hot pool after a day's skiing.
Turangi is world-renowned for trout fishing and is a base for excursions into Tongariro National Park and Kaimanawa and Pureroa Forest Parks. The Tongariro Crossing is the most popular one day walk in New Zealand and Whakapapa Ski Area (40 minutes drive away), is the largest ski area in New Zealand, catering for 10,000 skiers a day during the ski season. Several small picturesque settlements are close by, including historic Tokaanu with its thermal activity pools. Tokaanu, and the district in general, is rich in Maori history, and tribal home of the Ngati Tuwharetoa people.
Forty minutes drive away, at the northern end of the Lake, is the popular tourist destination of Taupo. From here it is a short drive to the geothermal regions of the central North Island and a choice of yet more, excellent golf courses. Turangi is equidistant between Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, and Wellington, the capital city, each being four hours drive. It is located alongside State Highway 1, the main highway network that intersects the whole of New Zealand, and all roads in the area are generally very good.
Turangi has accommodation, restaurants, transport and information services typically found in larger tourist towns, but without the associated high prices.
Real estate is also well-priced and all basic services, including shopping and banking, are available in Turangi. All major religious denominations are represented. There are several local pre-schools and primary schools, one high school – Tongariro High School, and bus services connecting to schools nearby in Taupo.
