Dr Hilliker Surgery is seeking a permanent full time General Practitioner. As the practice holds a PRIME (Primary Response in Medical Emergency) contract, the position would be most suited to a person with experience in emergency medicine.
Temuka is in South Canterbury on the East Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Temuka is 145km south of Christchurch and 18km north of Timaru, ideally situated to capitalise on everything that the South Island has to offer. Temuka has a tranquil feeling with its extensive collection of trees in the town’s domain. The Temuka district is blessed with several rivers that also provide plentiful opportunities for recreation, from a quiet picnic on the banks to swimming, fishing and that unique New Zealand occupation of white baiting. Thousands of holidaymakers visit Temuka every year to enjoy this small town of 4000 people and, which is renowned for it’s safe community atmosphere and the friendliness of the locals.
The name Temuka comes from the Maori "Te Umu Kaha" or "The Place of the Hot Ovens" and so it remains in the creations of the world renowned Temuka Pottery. While not all New Zealanders have visited Temuka, most will have a little piece of the town in their kitchens!
Temuka is a busy little service town with great schools and all nessacary retail outlets. The rural employment in the district include; sheep, dairy, fishing and mixed farming. The town is primarily a trade and servicing centre and its industrial activities are few. There are several dairy factories in the district as well with the ever expanding Fonterra Dairy factory just a few kilometres from the town, is the Southern Hemisphere's second largest cheese factory and the Monday livestock sales are New Zealand's biggest.
Temuka was the home of pioneer aviator and inventor Richard Pearse. Pearse, some say, became airborne under power early in 1903 before the Wright Brothers. Debate has raged about this for decades – visitors can stop at the monument marking the spot of the event, study the replica of his aircraft. Temuka is rich in history and has strong ties with it’s Maori heritage.
Temuka is loaded with things to do; you can spend the day at the picturesque golf course with views of the rolling Southern Alps. Maybe you have the desire for tramping, skiing, boating on the rivers and lakes fishing for salmon and trout, yachting, diving, horse riding or a recreational games of tennis it is all here. When you take a leisurely stroll through town you will find lovely shops, sidewalk cafes, restaurants, bars and art galleries. Temuka enjoys a summer with temperatures of 20 – 35C and a mild winter of 5 –16C.
