Ngati Porou Hauora is a four General Practitioner practice, supported by eight practice and rural nurses, a Practice Manager and eight Receptionists who work various shifts. The practice provides services to a low socio-economic, largely Maori population via a number of health centres located in each local rural community. The practice population of around 5,600 covers a large geographical boundary, which includes coastal, inland and mountainous towns. Cell phone coverage, while generally good, has a limited range within some of these communities.
Surgery hours are 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. On call hours are from 4.45pm to 8.00am weekdays and from 4.45pm on Friday to 8.00am on Monday. The practice provides additional services to the local hospital Te Whare Hauora o Ngati Porou, including after hours services. This is 11 kilometres from the practice and provides Accident & Emergency, long stay elderly care, obstetrics, maternity, physiotherapy and support services.
The practice uses the MedTech 32 computerised patient management system receiving capitated patient subsidies available as an Access PHO.
The closest secondary hospital, Gisborne Hospital, is 102 kilometres from Te Puia Springs. This has 93 medical and surgical inpatient beds. Tairawhiti District Health provides a range of medical specialists and community support with the district.
Ngati Porou Hauora is seeking a General Practitioner/Family Physician, to work eight hours per day (two sessions). An experienced full time practitioner is sought, with resuscitation and acute emergency skills. The practice has a Primary Response in Medical Emergency (PRIME) contract and responsibilities for this are shared between the General Practitioners and appropriately qualified nurses at the practice.
There is very good peer support and support for professional development, and the remuneration package is negotiable.
