Preferably with an immediate start date, Te Pou Ora Family Health Clinic has a full-time vacancy available for an experienced General Practitioner.
Te Kuiti is the principal urban area of the Waitomo District, and is a well-resourced town set amongst picturesque hill country. Known affectionately as the “sheep shearing capital of the world”, sheep and beef farming, notably dairying, and exotic forestry are the area’s dominant industries and each year the town hosts the New Zealand Shearing Championships. Two meat processing plants, a shoe factory and local lime works also provide work for the town’s population, which is around 6,500.
Te Kuiti is situated 78 kilometres south of the city of Hamilton and 19 kilometres north of Waitomo Caves. These world famous limestone and glow worm caves offer something for everyone, from guided boat tours to 100 metres of free hanging abseil, New Zealand’s deepest commercial abseiling. Other local tourist attractions include blackwater rafting and horse trekking. Golf, hunting, fishing, swimming and canoeing are other popular local activities.
Within easy driving distance from Te Kuiti are the tourist attractions of Rotorua (138 kilometres), Lake Taupo (122 kilometres), National Park for hiking and skiing (140 kilometres) Coromandel Peninsula (110 kilometres) and Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city (186 kilometres). Roads are good and the main trunk railway passes through the town. Te Kuiti Airport is small but has an all-weather runway.
Te Kuiti is surrounded by beautiful private gardens, and the Mangaokewa Scenic Reserve, where visitors can fish and swim, is one of many public parks and reserves in the district. At the southern end of the town is Tokanganui-a-Noho, a beautifully carved Maori meeting house, which can be visited by arrangement. Temperatures reach around 20 to 27 °C in the summer and on average 7 to 12 °C in the middle of the winter months.
The town has most of the facilities required to service an extensive rural area, including medical, school and community facilities and local government offices. In addition to numerous sports and cultural clubs, there is heated community pool and a very good fitness centre. Within the district are several preschools, four primary schools, and the area secondary school - Te Kuiti High School. Some of these preschools and primary schools cater specifically for the area’s Maori population, which is around 40 percent of the total. The Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) has regional operations in Te Kuiti and Waikato Hospital, in Hamilton, is a tertiary teaching hospital. Affiliated to the University of Auckland’s Medical and Health Sciences, it offers 50 medical placements, as well as training in pharmacy, health management and post-graduate studies.
