Ruapehu

Taumarunui, situated in a warm, sheltered scenic valley, has a population of around 5,000, with a further 15,000 in the district, and is the largest town in New Zealand’s Ruapehu region. It is the service centre for the surrounding rural area.

The town of Taumarunui is the northern gateway to Whanganui National Park, and the entry point for boat and canoe travellers to explore New Zealand’s largest boating river, the Whanganui River. This is 234 kilometres long, with a gentle gradient.

Taumarunui is also close to Tongariro World Heritage Park. This park includes Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu mountains. The Tongariro Crossing is the most popular one day walk in New Zealand and Whakapapa Ski Area (40 minutes drive from Taumarunui), is the largest ski area in New Zealand, catering for 10,000 skiers a day during the ski season. Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake, is 30 minutes drive from Taumarunui and several small picturesque settlements are close by, including historic Tokaanu with its thermal activity pools.

The district in general is rich in Maori history and Taumarunui was originally a Maori settlement at the junction of canoe routes linking the Central North Island with downstream villages. The first European settlement was in 1874 and, following the completion of the Main Trunk Railway in 1908, Taumarunui experienced rapid growth as a timber milling town before turning to agriculture. Today the main agricultural activities are sheep, cattle, dairy and deer farming, and tourism is becoming an increasingly important industry.

Hiking, walking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, golf (Taumarunui’s scenic course is rated in New Zealand’s Top 50), skiing, horse riding, relaxing in thermal pools, garden tours and Maori culture are all activities that can be enjoyed from the region.

A good range of shopping, banking and essential services is available in Taumarunui. All major religious denominations are represented. There are several local pre-schools and primary schools, one high school – Taumarunui High School, and a local campus of the Western Institute of Technology (WITT) offers polytechnic courses.
