Tapanui, on State Highway 90, is situated on the edge of the forest at the base of the Blue Mountains. This attractive town (population 900) is surrounded by the gently rolling and intense green farmland of West Otago. Chat to the local folk, they are friendly and will welcome you. Take time for a round or two of golf at the excellent country golf course, visit the well known Blue Mountain Nurseries, enjoy a latte at the local café or wander through the Vintage Machinery Museum.
There are two preschools, one primary school and one secondary school in Tapanui. There are also plenty shopping facilities such as a hairdresser, post shop, supermarket, chemist, two cafés, hardware store and many more. There are also two churches, a volunteer fire brigade, community library and a swimming pool.
Only one and half hours from Dunedin’s International Airport, Tapanui is ideally situated for taking day trips to the southern scenic attractions including The Catlins, The South Coast, Fiordland, The Lakes District and Central Otago.
With extensive scenic views and a sawmilling history, West Otago has much to offer. There are several touring loops to bike or drive. You may also walk or bike the forest tracks on the Blue Mountains, fish the Pomahaka River, hunt in the local mountains, picnic at the picturesque Leithen Glen or view the monument at Kelso - the now fertile farmland was once a thriving township. Twelve kilometres to the north is Heriot. See the historic Todd Cottage and once more try out your golfing skills on yet another attractive West Otago golf course (9-hole).
Activities
Fishing - The season opens from October until the end of April. Guided fishing tours, lunches and transport can be arranged by us and lessons are available. The area is world renowned for it's wild brown trout fly fishing. Walks - Whiskey Gully has two walks, one of 10 min. with level walking, the other walk is three to five hours, encompassing three waterfalls. Reasonable footwear or sturdy shoes are required. Lunches can be catered for by the Lodge. Duck Shooting - The duck shooting season is from the 1st Saturday in May until the end of June. A firearms licence is required and local shooters would be keen to take you to the best locations. Hunting - Hunting trips can be arranged with local guides. The near-by Blue Mountains provide excellent hunting with the quarry mainly pigs, Fallow deer, and Red deer. Hunger packs are available. Cost is typically NZ$100 to NZ$300 per day out. Golf - The near-by township of Tapanui has an excellent 18 hole golf course and there is also a nine hole course at Heriot. Both have excellent club houses. Gore, about a 20 minutes drive from Mainholm also has a top class 18 hole course. Wilderness Dining - Eat beside nature at idyllic Leithen Glen in the heart of the Dusky Forest or walk through the forest and find your own spot. Hamper baskets are available. There are many beautiful West Otago picnic spots. Plant Nurseries - In nearby Tapanui is Blue Mountain Nurseries, famous for Rhododendron and the National Ivy Collection.
