Rotherham is situated 112 km North West of Christchurch, in the South Island of New Zealand with a population estimated around 2200 including its surrounding areas. Rotherham is in the centre of the beautiful Hurunui District, which boasts amazing mountain scenery, a thriving agricultural and tourism industry, as well as a host of recreational pursuits.
Rotherham and Waiau offer some of the best access to the Waiau River for freshwater fishing enthusiasts. Trout can be found here in good numbers and the salmon are found running from February to March each year.
Temperatures in the Rotherham area reach around 20 to 24 °C in the summer and on average 10 to 12 °C in the middle of the winter months.
Rotherham has a primary school, which provides a wonderful learning environment for children from years 1 to year 6.
There is also an area school at Culverden, ten minutes South (Bus from Rotherham Primary School), which caters for children from year one to year 13. There is an Academy for Learning attached to the Area School, which provides courses in the agriculture and tourist industries. The Area School also provides night courses for adults in such subjects as woodwork, upholstery, computing and crafts.
Also in Culverden, the Red Post Café, which has the best coffee and food in all of the South Island, and a great ‘Store’; both of which have been featured in New Zealand Life and Leisure magazine.
The Amuri Golf Course is located between Rotherham and Waiau. A well maintained rural 12-hole course with a lovely mountain backdrop. The Waiau Lodge Hotel offers country hospitality at its best. Stop in for a coffee, great food or a glass of local wine beside the open fire. The cafe offers separate intimate restaurant dining and accommodation is available.
Waiau tours are available for those seeking some New Zealand adventure. Flexible day and half day tours incorporating fishing, jet boating or 4WD sightseeing are provided by experienced local tour guides.
Also close by is Mt Lyford lodge, a great stop after skiing at Mt Lyford. It offers great wines, food, local art, coffee, jewellery, huge alpine fireplace, spas and accommodation. All just 30 minutes north from Rotherham.
The famous spa town of Hanmer Springs is just 25 minutes north west of Rotherham. The Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve is visited by over half a million visitors annually & is one of NZ’s most visited attractions. The Amuri Community Arts Council’s Amuri Gallery at Hanmer Springs, is an intimate gallery not only providing the opportunity for the many exceedingly talented arts and crafts persons of this unique area to exhibit, but also from time to time features exhibitions by invited artists. There is unrestricted entry, either through the library or the entrance at the rear of the building.
