Current vacancies in Reefton

It's our vision to be a centre of excellence for rural health delivery. We're already leading the way and with your help we'll continue to.

Reefton is situated in the Inangahua River valley, between the rugged and spectacular Victoria and Paparoa ranges. Its central location, at a State highway hub, means good roading access to the West Coast (1 hour), as well as the cities of Nelson (2.5 hours) and Christchurch (2.75 hours).

Reefton has a population of approximately 1000 and a vibrant community spirit. The town had prosperous beginnings with the discovery of gold in the late 1860s and many of the original heritage buildings still service the area. Mining continues to be important, with coal, gold and hard rock mining carried out. Dairy farming and sawmilling are other substantial industries.

Reefton is surrounded by Victoria Conservation Park, New Zealand’s largest of 180,000 hectares. The park was established for its magnificent beech forests and many historic gold sites. It offers a range of outdoor opportunities, including hiking, walking, mountain biking, four-wheel driving, deer hunting and trout fishing, which complements the town’s amenities.  These include a golf course, heated indoor pool, squash, netball, basketball and tennis courts, and a newly constructed world class roller park. Clubs include cricket, rugby, soccer, netball, basketball, karate, boxing, pool, and darts. The nearest ski field is 90 minutes' drive.

A range of shops and services allows most items to be purchased locally and Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian and Pentecostal churches are represented.

Preschool facilities are available in Reefton in the form of playcentre, playgroup, preschool gym and music, and a toy library. Reefton has two schools – Reefton Area School caters for children from Year 1 through to Year 13 and Sacred Heart is a Catholic Integrated school catering from Year 1 to Tear 8. Tai Poutini Polytechnic now has a campus in Reefton, and is currently running a range of civil engineering courses from this site.
