Rakaia is a small, friendly rural township dominated by the snow-fed Rakaia River, which is world-famous for salmon-fishing. It is also one of New Zealand’s most productive horticultural and farming areas, with an abundance of rich alluvial soil and water, making it ideal for both production and home gardening. As well as being the salmon capital of New Zealand, Rakaia is also known as the “salad bowl” of the nation. Sheep and deer farms are in abundance. More recently dairy farming has become established and a new addition is an ostrich farm.

Just 50 kilometres from the main South Island city of Christchurch, and 26 kilometres from Ashburton, Rakaia’s resident population is just 800, but its sporting and social amenities make it an attractive location for visitors. As well as salmon and trout fishing (along 50 kilometres of accessible braided river), recreational rafting, kayaking, jet boating, horse trekking, rock-hounding, skiing, hiking, tramping, mountaineering, windsurfing (at nearby Lake Coleridge), golf and bird watching can be enjoyed.

Popular Mt Hutt Skifield is only 30 kilometres away along a scenic drive, which takes in the picturesque historic Barrhill Village. In addition to skiing, the Mt Hutt range provides great opportunities for mountaineering and Rakaia rivertramping.

On the western edge of Rakaia is a well-maintained sports domain (park) with squash and tennis courts, sports fields and a bowling green. Five kilometres to the east of the township is a well-appointed golf course, en route to the beach and river mouth. Also at Terrace Downs High Country Resort is an international golf course, which boasts spectacular views, seven lakes and 70 bunkers.

A monthly craft fair is supplied with quality products by local artisans.

Amenities include a variety of accommodation through farmstays, historic guesthouses, holiday parks, motels and a hotel; Salmon Tales Café and Bar, two hospitable local pubs; library; Anglican, Catholic, and Presbyterian Churches. Rakaia has its own highly regarded primary/intermediate school (Rakaia School), with co-educational secondary school Ashburton College only a short distance away and served by bus.

There is good cellphone coverage in all but the most remote mountainous districts. Summer temperatures range between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, and 0 – 15 during winter.
