The population of Putaruru is about 3,500, with a further 7,000 in the surrounding district. Lake Taupo, Waitomo Caves, Rotorua, and the cities of Tauranga and Hamilton are all within an hour's drive and the skifields of Mt Ruapehu are within an easy day trip.
Water features prominently in and around Putaruru. The town is situated close to Lake Arapuni on the Waikato River and within a 20 kilometre radius there are 20 trout-filled rivers. It is also the home of internationally-acclaimed Blue Spring, which produces water that is among the purest in the world, taking between 50 and 100 years the reach the surface. Blue Spring is the source of the town's municipal water and it also supplies 60 percent of New Zealand's bottle water. There are several attractive walkways and bush reserves around Blue Spring, and the district in general, and Putaruru Water Park, which includes 5,000 native plants, has been constructed in recognition of the purity of the water.
Putaruru, which is Maori for 'home of the owl', has a history of farming and timber. It is now the commercial centre for some of the most productive dairy farmland in the country. The Lichfield Dairy Factory, one of the newest and largest cheese factories in the world, is just six kilometres from the town centre. Putaruru's Timber Museum recognises the importance of that industry to the town's development, and every year Putaruru is host to the national woodturning competitions.
Putaruru has a good range of small retail shops and services and several sports and cultural clubs. These are well-described on the town’s website (see below). All main religious denominations are represented and the town has four preschools, two primary schools and a high school – Putaruru High School. Tertiary education, including university (University of Waikato) and polytechnic (Wintec) facilities, is available from Hamilton. Waikato Hospital, in Hamilton, is a tertiary teaching hospital. Affiliated to the University of Auckland's Medical and Health Sciences, it offers 50 medical placements, as well as training in pharmacy, health management and post-graduate studies.
