Putaruru - Tirau Family Doctors Ltd in Putaruru is Putaruru’s only large medical centre, employing five General Practitioners. The centrally located, purpose-built premisesinclude four consulting rooms and facilities for visiting clinics, which include Antenatal, an Osteopath, a Podiatrist, an ENT Specialist, a Audiology Clinic andMedLab is also on the premises. The practice is well-equipped and offers a supportive environment. The satellite clinic in Tirau is equally well equipped and staffed.

The practice has a patient pool of 7,000, with up to 200 patients seen on average each day. The practice also provides external services to two local rest homes. The practice is affiliated to the Pinnacle Primary Health Organisation (PHO), receiving capitated patient subsidies for non-accident care, and is computerised, using the Profile for Mac computerised patient management system.

The practice’s General Practitioners are supported bysix practice nurses, a practice manager and five receptionists. The practice is open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm weekdays. The on call roster, undertaken in Tokoroa, is 1:14 for both weeknights and weekends. On call hours are 5pm to 8pm week nights and 8am to 8pm weekends. There is no overnight on call requirement.

The local hospital at Tokoroa, 23 kilometres away, provides Accident & Emergency, x-ray and outpatient clinics. The base hospital is Waikato, one of New Zealand’s largest hospitals, with 650 beds and a diverse range of services. Waikato Hospital, 70 kilometres away, is also a tertiary teaching hospital.

The current vacancy has arisen through the increase in patient numbers,the departure of one of the Doctors for family reasons, and the necessity to have five Doctors on staff to provide the community with the best possible medical care. Supervision is available and vocational training and peer group meetings are available locally.
