A seven metre high bottle of Lemon & Paeroa welcomes visitors to Paeroa, The Coromandel, New Zealand.
Paeroa, population around 7,000, is centrally located in the Hauraki District, with easy access to many main centres. Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, is 130 kilometres away, Hamilton city – 70 kilometres, Tauranga – 87 kilometres and the tourist attractions of Rotorua – 125 kilometres. The magnificent swimming and surfing beaches of the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty offering are also within easy reach, the closest being Waihi Beach (38 kilometres). Roads are generally very good.
Paeroa is situated alongside the Waihou river in a picturesque valley of historical significance. It was the site of a major gold rush in 1875 and later that century became famed for its spring water. New Zealand’s own national soft drink, Lemon & Paeroa, had its origins here. The mineral water was pumped from a deep well to a manufacturing and bottling plant, where, with the addition of lemon, it was processed into the popular soft drink. Today, as a tribute, a seven metre high bottle of Lemon & Paeroa greets visitors on arrival to Paeroa. Over recent years the town’s industries have expanded to include several manufacturing firms producing a wide variety of products for national and international markets and these line the main approaches to the town. A winery and several cafes also give the town its own character.
Taking pride of place in the town is the Paeroa Domain, a beautiful park with several rare trees within 100 metres of the main street. A local museum celebrates the town’s history, with relics from the gold days and several Maori artefacts. Another popular focal point is the Paeroa Historical Maritime Park, which offers restored vessels and displays.
The Karangahake Gorge is a popular and historically significant walkway, a short distance from Paeroa, The Coromandel, New Zealand.
Local activities include trout fishing, rock climbing, golf, swimming and horse racing at the local racecourse. The climate is mild and most activities can be enjoyed year round. The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway is a popular hike that passes several important historical features and each February the ‘Battle of the Streets’, incorporating motorcycle races and a Pipe Band Tattoo, attracts participants and crowds to Paeroa from all over New Zealand and overseas.
Paeroa is well served with amenities. These include all major banks, several service stations, community pool and library, dentist, supermarket and shops, with extended services, including options for tertiary education, available from the cities of Tauranga, Hamilton and Auckland. All main religious denominations are represented and Paeroa has several pre and primary schools, and its own high school – Paeroa College.
