Catlins Medical Centre

Return to Owaka

Catlins Medical Centre is open from 9am to 5pm weekdays, with an evening surgery on Thursdays from 7.00pm to 8.30pm. It has 2,100 patients, with 20-30 seen per day on average. External services include Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning clinics from Clutha Health First, the local hospital. On call (both weekday and weekend) is 1:6; weekends are split so on call is one day every third weekend. There is one General Practitioner, a practice manager, two practice nurses and a receptionist. An orthopaedic specialist visits a half day each month. The practice is affiliated to the South Link Health Independent Practitioners' Association (IPA), which provides support for its GPs. The practice's General Practitioner, Dr Alison Cook, is an accredited teacher for General Practitioner vocational training.

Owaka has a pharmacy and limited x-ray facilities are available at the Catlins Medical Centre. A volunteer ambulance service operates two days a week and most nights and weekends. Twenty-four hour a day paramedic support is provided from Balclutha.

Based in Balcutha, Clutha Health First is the closest hospital to the Catlins Medical Centre, 32 kilometres from the practice. This is a 13-bed hospital, with one Medical Officer of Special Scale (MOSS). There is a small obstetric unit run by midwives only, but no accident and emergency or surgery.

The base hospital is Dunedin Hospital, 120 kilometres and approximately 90 minutes by car. Dunedin Hospital has 400 beds and offers a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and day services, as well as maternity services.

Catlins Medical Centre is looking for a General Practitioner to join as a long-term assistant or partner. A fully-furnished house and car are available for a long-term assistant/locum. Relocation costs would be considered for a General Practitioner wishing to take up the position on a permanent basis.
