Otorohanga Medical Centre, located in the heart of the town, is the only medical centre in Otorohanga. It is a purpose built, well-equipped practice with its own x-ray facilities and a local pharmacy next door that has been recently extended. There are opportunities for orthopedic management.

The practice is notable for its low staff turnover. Otorohanga Medical Centre’s four General Practitioners have many years of experience and are all vocationally trained. Oversight is available on site.

The practice has a patient pool of around 6,800 with 30 patients seen per General Practitioner on average each day. The practice is affiliated to the Pinnacle Primary Health Organisation (PHO), receiving capitated patient subsidies for non-accident care, and is computerised, using the Medtech Computerised Patient Management System.

The practice’s five General Practitioners are supported by 3 full time nurses, a practice manager and four part-time receptionists. A public health nurse provides additional services locally, dental therapist and district nurses based at the local hospital 19 kilometres away in Te Kuiti.

The practice is open from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm weekdays, and appointments run from 9.00 am to 4.20 pm, with a 90 minute lunch break. The on call roster is 1:5 weeknights and 1:4 weekends. Nurse triage handles all after hours calls and the General Practitioner is referred to only if necessary. Additional benefits are one half day off every week and eight weeks annual leave. A three-day weekend follows each weekend on call. Cell phone coverage is excellent.

The base hospital is Waikato, one of New Zealand’s largest hospitals, with 650 beds and a diverse range of services. Waikato Hospital is also a tertiary teaching hospital.

Otorohanga Medical Centre’s directors are seeking a General Practitioner to join there friendly team with a view to full partnership. The practice could assist with relocation and the provision initially, of cottage accommodation. Low cost rental accommodation is available over the longer term.
