The directors of Otorohanga Medical Centre are seeking an experienced, family-oriented General Practitioner. The successful candidate will be well-supported and leave provisions are very generous.
Otorohanga is a small town, population of 8000 including the rural area, which is big on hospitality and well-located, within easy reach of North Island attractions and main cities.
The town is home to the impressive Kiwi House and Native Bird Park, which has New Zealand’s largest collection of native birds. Otorohanga is also the closest town to Waitomo Caves, which attract 400,000 visitors a year. These world famous limestone and glow worm caves, just 10 minutes away, offer something for everyone, from guided boat tours to 100 metres of free hanging abseil, New Zealand’s deepest commercial abseiling. Other local tourist attractions include blackwater rafting and horse trekking. With temperatures fluctuating from an average 24° Celsius in summer to 12° in winter, outdoor activities can be comfortably enjoyed for most of the year.
Fifty-five minutes drive to the west of Otorohanga, through rich farmland, is the small coastal settlement of Kawhia. This offers fishing, swimming, hiking and horse trekking, as well as Te Puia Hot Springs at Ocean Beach.
Also within easy driving distance from Otorohanga are the tourist attractions of Rotorua (90 minutes), Lake Taupo (105 minutes), National Park for hiking and skiing (120 minutes) and the cities of Hamilton (45 minutes), Tauranga (90 minutes) and Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city (120 minutes). Roads are good and the main trunk railway passes through the town.
Otorohanga had its beginnings over 150 years ago, as a Maori settlement. The first European settlers were timber millers, and today the region gets its primary income from highly profitable dairy, sheep and beef farms. People take pride in their gardens and many of these are open to the public. Farm homestays are included in the broad range of accommodation available in the region, along with backpackers, bed and breakfast, motels and hotels.
Otorohanga has all the shopping and service facilities one would expect from a rural service centre close to a major tourist attraction. All main religious denominations are represented, there is a comprehensive variety of cultural and sports clubs, including a highly-rated golf course and an indoor heated public swimming pool.
Otorohanga has several preschools and primary schools, and one high school – Otorohanga College. Tertiary education, including university (University of Waikato) and polytechnic (Wintec) facilities, is available from Hamilton. Wintec also offers regional courses from Te Kuiti, 19 kilometres from Otorohanga. Waikato Hospital, in Hamilton, is a tertiary teaching hospital. Affiliated to the University of Auckland’s Medical and Health Sciences, it offers 50 medical placements, as well as training in pharmacy, health management and post-graduate studies.
