Horowhenua Community Practice has just relocated to a purpose built suite within the new Horowhenua Health Centre. Laboratory services, radiology and pharmacy are within close proximity within the same complex. The HCP suite comprises eight doctor/nurse consult rooms, a large waiting area and an adminstrative area. It has access to procedure rooms in the Health Centrewith ambulance access, and shares emergency and other equipment with other practitioners. HCP’s four General Practitioners are supported by four practice nurses, a practice manager, reception and administrative staff.
The practice has 5000 enrolled patients and an average of 90 patients are seen by doctors daily. Nurses also conduct their own patient consultations, as well as assisting the doctors. Horowhenua Community Practice also provides external services to three rest homes, as well as providing Occupational Health services to numerous businesses in the town. Surgery hours are 8.00 am – 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday. Afterhours on-call is shared with all the other Levin doctors on a1:12 roster. Emergencies are diverted to Palmerston North after 8 pmon weeknights and 7pm on weekend nights.
The practice is fully computerised, using the Medtech 32 patient management system. HCP is a member of the Horowhenua Primary Health Organisation, receiving capitated patient subsidies for non-accident care and Compass (incorporating Manawatu Independent Practitioners Association), which provides support for its members.
Horowhenua Primary Health Organisation (HPHO)
Horowhenua Primary Health Organisation, is housed in the Horowhenua Health Centre and provides educational and admnistrative support to the doctors in the Horowhenua area, as well as augmenting general practice services to the patients of the area. These include diabetic retinopathy screening, podiatry, smoking cessation, asthma management, dietitian and healthy activity clinics, wound management services, as well as community based nursing and patient support. Currently, a full cardiac assessment unit is being established.
Hospitals in the area
The local hospital – Horowhenua Hospital – is part of the Horowhenua Health Centre. This is a small hospital providing maternity, rehabilitation, geriatric and palliative care services. The Health Centre also houses the Sexual and Mental Health Services, as well as numerous outpatient specialist clinics.
The closest base hospital, that provides a full range of tertiary services, is at Palmerston North, 65 kilometres away. The Ambulance service is located next to the Health Centre and provides full paramedic and trauma services.
Expansion at HCP
Horowhenua Community Practice is wishing to expand it’s service and has a vacancy, effective immediately. A second vacancy has opened. There is no Primary Response in Medical Emergency (PRIME) or Medical Officer of Special Scale (MOSS) associated with either position.
