Levin is a thriving provincial town, with a population of around 18,000. Nestled beneath the Tararua Ranges, the town was founded in 1889 during the construction of the Wellington/Palmerston North railway. On the junction of State Highway 1 and 57, there is easy access to Wellington City in the south via the Kapiti Coast, Palmerston North to the north and the Wairarapa to the east. With numerous wide, sandy swimming beaches in close proximity, and its own lake, Lake Horowhenua, there are plenty of recreational offerings. Swim, kayak, fish, cycle, horse ride or hike!

The district’s rich alluvial soil and mild temperate climate is perfect for market gardening, berry-farming, orchards, horticulture and agriculture. Numerous roadside stalls offer fresh fruit and vegetables year-round at very reasonable prices.

Levin has a strong employment base, which also includes manufacturing (there are numerous clothing factories) and a commercial/servicing sector. Several central government agencies are represented along the town’s main street, which is bordered by trees and dotted with flower beds.

The largest town in the Horowhenua District, many residents are attracted by the opportunity to purchase ‘lifestyle blocks’, enjoying the country life without the isolation.

Levin provides the region’s sporting, cultural, recreational and community facilities, including a multiplex cinema complex. There are 14 public parks and reserves within its boundaries. Education is also well-serviced, with several primary schools and two colleges. Polytechnic and university facilities are available in Wellington (Victoria University of Wellington and a campus of Massey University) and Palmerston North (Massey University), which is about 50 minutes drive away. The town has recently seen the opening of the Horowhenua Health Centre. This complex includes in-patient facilites for the elderly, as well as specialist out-patient clinics, GP practices and related services such as laboratory and radiolology.

South of Levin, the Kapiti Coast is one of the fastest growing areas in New Zealand. Its close proximity to both Wellington and Palmerston North gives many residents an opportunity to reside in the district, enjoying the environment and commuting to their choice of employment within an hours drive or train ride. Being well-serviced with shops and amenities and offering a healthy beach and country lifestyle, the area is also a popular place in which to retire.
