Kerikeri Medical Centre is looking for a General Practitioner to join the friendly team, and will negotiate all terms of the appointment, from the type of engagement and income, to assistance with relocation, accommodation, vehicle and registration.
Kerikeri is the main centre of the Bay of Islands, Northland, an aquatic playground with 144 islands and hundreds of secluded beaches. The region’s subtropical climate, with winters that are mainly mild, means a wide range of outdoor activities can be enjoyed all year. Included are yachting, diving, snorkelling, swimming with dolphins and fishing. Big game fishing, especially for marlin, is among the best available.
Kerikeri has always been regarded as a desirable location for settlement. Before European arrival, it was popular with Maori, and is also the site of the country’s oldest house, Kerikeri Mission House, built in 1822. The district’s history has been well-preserved, and historical highlights include Mission House and Rewa’s Village, a replica Maori village.
These days Kerikeri is a unique blend of heritage, horticulture, arts and crafts, and adventure. The town’s population is 5,000 with a further 7000 in the surrounding district. Approximately 20 percent of the town population is Maori.
Oranges, kiwifruit and avocados are grown commercially and there is a wide variety of seafood and award-winning locally produced wines. Not surprisingly, there is a good choice of cafes and restaurants. The popularity of the district with artists, especially painters, potters, leadlight artists and sculptors, is evident in the number of galleries and craft shops, and even in the look of the town centre. And along with the marine attractions, are numerous other environmental attractions, such as the 21-metre Rainbow Falls, just a short distance from the town centre, and Puketi Kauri Forest.
Kerikeri is 3.5 hours drive from Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, or one hour by air from Kerikeri Regional Airport. There are also bus connections between Auckland and Kerikeri and other main Northland centres. Within Northland, places of interest are easily accessible, and a series of ‘trails’ connects people to common points of interest, whether it is heritage, wine, golf or art.
Excellent sporting facilities in Kerikeri include a championship golf course and all-weather tennis courts. There is a large variety of sports and cultural clubs, which is well-itemised in the town’s website (link below). Most shopping needs can be met locally, with a larger selection available from Whangarei, 94 kilometres south, and there is a full range of services available. Most churches are represented at Kerikeri, which has a range of pre-schools and primary schools (Riverview Primary, Kerikeri Primary School and a Christian school) and an excellent high school (Kerikeri High School). In addition a very good private alternative is available – Springbank School – which caters for all age groups.
