Huntly, a town of about 7,000 is located in the north of the Waikato, approximately 90km’s south of Auckland, 45 km’s north of Hamilton. Huntly is situated on either side of the Waikato River; the Tainui Bridge is used to link the two sides of the town together. Also located near Huntly is the coastal town of Raglan. This small town of about three and a half thousand people is also known for it's world famous breaks are found at 3 points: Manu Bay, Whale Bay and The Indicators. This is the hottest surfing mecca in NZ, if not in this part of the planet. Manu Bay (Waireke) is 8 kms from Raglan. This famous surf break, also known as The Point, as it is said to have the longest left hand ride in the world.
This small town’s main rural activities are dairy farming and cattle and sheep raising. Huntly is a bustling, industrial town surrounded by rich farmlands and lakes, which are popular for yachting, water skiing, canoeing and windsurfing. With a lot of history behind it, Huntly was founded in the 1850’s, and originally known as Rahuipokeka. Huntly’s coal mines produce much of the regions energy, and it’s history is on display in the Huntly Waikato Coalfields Museum. Huntly enjoys a very rich cultural life, boasting internationally recognised arts organisations, vibrant traditional music and dance groups, and a host of clubs and associations.
There are many wonderful attractions in Huntly, such attractions include; The War Memorial Rose Gardens, these gardens are situated opposite the War Memorial Hall and the Genesis Energy Huntly Aquatic Centre, there are various different walkways around the lakes. These walkways are called The Lake Hakanoa Walkway,The Hakarimata Walkway and Weavers Park Walkway.
