Hanmer Springs Health Centre has been owned by the Hanmer Springs Community Trust since 2002. At present, the centre is located in a renovated house on the grounds of Queen Mary Hospital, plans for a new purpose built facility are underway with the building for this new facility commencing in two to three months, completion is expected early next year. All administration, employment and funding issues are dealt with by the Trust’s administration team, leaving doctors free to practice medicine.
The practice has a registered practice population of 800 and serves the large number of tourists who visit the area each year. It is open for clinics between 9.00 am and 1.00 pm and 2.30 pm to 5.00 pm every weekday. After hours call is shared with Amuri Community Health Centre, 25 minutes south east of Hanmer Springs. This allows a sustainable 1:4 on call roster.
The practice currently has one General Practitioner working three days per week, and participates in 1:4 on call roster. The General Practitioner is supported by highly experienced nursing staff. The rural nurse specialist leads the clinic two days a week, supports the doctor and participates fully in the after hours roster. An advanced rural nurse, responsible for the area's District Nursing Service and occasionally leads the clinic with GP backup. Both nurses are registered smear takers, ECP providers and specialise in their own areas of clinical responsibility. Additional support comes from a practice nurse one day a week, a full-time Receptionist, Office Administrator and a Practice Manager. A Physiotherapist and Massage Therapist work independently in Hanmer Springs, and pharmacies at Amberley and Christchurch provide a daily service.
The practice is a member of the Hurunui Kaikoura Primary Health Organisation (PHO), receiving capitated patient subsidies for non-accident care. It is fully computerised, using the Medtech 32 patient management system.
The local hospital is Waikari Hospital, 80 kilometres away, a 12-bed rural hospital which provides a range of long-term, respite, medical and maternity services (no A&E or GP obstetrics). The closest base hospital is Christchurch Hospital, one of the major hospitals in New Zealand, 150 kilometres from the practice. Three ambulances serve the wider Hanmer Springs area, with a first response unit based in Hanmer and a St John unit 20 minutes away in Culverden.
Hanmer Springs Health Centre is looking for a General Practitioner. Ideally the successful candidate will be vocationally qualified, with broad experience in general practice, including the stabilisation and management of trauma cases. The practice holds a PRIME (Primary Response in Medical Emergency) contract.
The General Practitioner is required for four days per week. Remuneration is negotiable. The practice maintains a one bedroom flat for the doctor's use just five minutes walk from the premises, if this is not suitable the Practice will source accommodation for the General Practitioner. A free pass to the themal spa complex for the GP and family is also available for the duration of the placement as well as a free golf club membership.
