Featherston Medical Centre

Return to Featherston

Featherston

Featherston Medical Centre is looking for a second full-time General Practitioner to join the practice’s existing vocationally registered General Practitioner, either as a partner or on salary.

The practice operates from purpose-built premises and has around 3,800 patients. Surgery hours are 8.45 am to 5.15 pm, with one late night (7.00 pm) per doctor per fortnight. On call is minimal: two nights every four weeks for weekdays, and one weekend every six weeks.

Featherston Medical Centre’s two General Practitioners work closely with other South Wairarapa medical centres at Martinborough and Greytown. In addition to great peer support, the practice is well-resourced with experienced and supportive nursing and administrative staff. The clinical work is interesting and varied and represents a great opportunity for a General Practitioner interested in minor surgery, obstetrics and forensic medicine, in addition to regularly-presenting conditions.

The practice uses the Medtech 32 computerised patient management system and is affiliated to the Wairarapa Community Primary Health Organisation (PHO), receiving capitated patient subsidies available for PHO-affiliates.

There is a local pharmacy and an ambulance station based at Greytown is just 12 kilometres from the practice.

The closest base hospital, Wairarapa Hospital, is 40 kilometres away, or 30 minutes’ drive, on the outskirts of Masterton city. The pride of the community, Wairarapa Hospital moved into new facilities during May 2006. This is a busy rural hospital with up to 92 beds, covering all aspects of secondary health care including medical, surgical, obstetric, paediatric, assessment and rehabilitation for young and older adults, high dependency care and mental health. Also provided is a 24-hour acute/emergency service and an ambulance service. There are three tertiary level hospitals within 90 minutes’ drive of Featherston (Palmerston North, Hutt Vally and Wellington).

Vocational training is available and there is regular Continuing Medical Education (CME).
