Darfield is the main town on State Highway 73 between Christchurch and the West Coast. State Highway 73 is also known as The Great Alpine Highway. With stunning views of snow-capped mountains, gorgeous spring-time blossoms and some of New Zealand’s highest temperatures come summer; Darfield is a pleasure to visit at any time of year. With a population of approximately 1000, Darfield is a lovely quaint town, yet close enough to the bright lights of Christchurch to see and enjoy.
Darfield serves as the regional centre of the Malvern district. Malvern is an area renowned for its arable and pastoral farming. It is also the gateway to the scenic attractions of the Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers and the alpine splendor of Arthur's Pass and the Southern Alps.
Darfield is a vibrant small community with shops, cafes, sporting facilities, medical and dental facilities, a hotel and wine bar, churches and educational facilities. There are 10 Primary Schools throughout the area as well as Darfield High School. The town is also close to Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island.
There is a strong sporting focus throughout the region. Sports clubs cater for children through to adults and encompass indoor and outdoor bowls, hockey, rugby, soccer, indoor and outdoor netball, tennis, indoor and outdoor cricket, swimming, touch rugby, golf and squash.
Darfield has several service groups such as Lions, Probus, Scouts and Guides and the town is home to the Selwyn Gallery which is a showcase for the district's arts.
The ski-fields at Porter Heights and Mt Hutt are near by and all skiing equipment can be hired in Darfield. The whole area is also famous for trout and salmon fishing.
