Return to Dannevirke

Baurraud St Picture
Barraud Street Health Centre is attached to the Dannevirke Community Hospital.

The Barraud Street Health Centre is attached to the local community hospital, Dannevirke Community Hospital. Visiting specialists’ clinics and community mental health services at the hospital allow a close working relationship between General Practitioners, consultants and other community health workers, and the hospital provides a valuable after hours clinical and triage service.

Barraud Street Health Centre is a busy, fully computerised practice, using the Medtech computerised patient management system. It provides a full range of primary health care, including: accident and emergency type work, acute care, ambulance and helicopter service, general medical services, maternity and sexual health. The practice has joined the Tararua Primary Health Organisation (PHO), receiving capitated patient subsidies for non-accident care.

The practice currently employs four General Practitioners (one of whom is the practice owner), six practice nurses and five reception and administration staff. It is open 8.30 am – 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday, and also Saturday mornings for the on call doctor. On call weekends (1:4) require the General Practitioner to open the practice for 2-3 hours on a Saturday morning. On call typically involves minimal call-outs as the calls are first dealt with by the community hospital nursing staff. Barraud Street Health Centre has 6,900 patients, with an average of 150 patients seen at the practice each day. Mid week on call until 10.00pm is available, after this patients are seen at Palmerston North A&E.

Dannevirke Community Hospital contains eight General Practitioner beds, three maternity beds, x-ray and ultra sound services, visiting specialist clinics, mental health services, district nurses, lab collection services and physiotherapy. The General Practitioners admit and look after their own patients in hospital. The closest base hospital, providing a full range of tertiary services, is at Palmerston North, 50 kilometres away. Depending on availability, an ambulance can be at the practice within five minutes of being called.

Barraud Street Health Centre is seeking a General Practitioner to join the friendly team with a competitive salary offered. The practice is willing to help with relocation, accommodation and vehicle assistance and will pay registration and medical indemnity insurance for each completed year. The Barraud Street Health Centre is a certified teaching practice and will support the successful candidate’s attendance in the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners training programme.
