Barraud Street Medical Centre in Dannevirke is seeking a General Practitioner to join the team on salary. This a certified teaching practice and support with further training through the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners programme will be provided.
Dannevirke, population 6200, is a family-focussed town with a strong sense of community. It is situated in the Tararua District, which boasts two forest parks, three mountain ranges, rugged coastline, bush-covered valleys and nearly 300 kilometres of river network. The climate has defined seasons, with summer temperatures reaching above 30°C and cool winters.
Dannevirke’s location means a number of lower North Island attractions can be easily reached. The city of Palmerston North, with a wide range of shopping and dining facilities, is 40 minutes drive away. Palmerston North is home to Massey University, one of New Zealand’s largest universities, a polytechnic, and an international airport. Dannevirke is just over an hour’s drive from Napier, the art deco centre of the New Zealand surrounded by some of the country’s best vineyards and orchards. Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city, is 2.5 hours to the south and the North Island’s largest skifields are 2.5 hours to the north. The surf beaches of the East Coast are a 40-minute drive from town. Many Dannevirke residents also own holiday homes at the beaches.
European settlement of Dannevirke began in 1872 with the arrival of 13 Danish and eight Norwegian families brought out under a special immigration scheme. The early settlers built the town, established timber mills and developed farmland. Today Dannevirke is an important service centre for the rural community. It is a prosperous, busy town with a variety of shops and restaurants and a large, modern supermarket. It has a newly renovated cinema and live theatre, large community library, local marae (Maori meeting house) and 20 hectare domain, which includes an impressive ‘Viking Ship’ playground.
Activities that can be enjoyed in and around Dannevirke include: swimming in the town’s heated indoor pool, fully equipped gym and aerobics studio, golf (Dannevirke’s course has been voted best rural course in New Zealand), squash, tennis, netball, bowls, cycling, shooting, cricket, rugby, hiking, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.
Dannevirke has several primary schools, including a Catholic school and Te Kura kaupapa (a Maori-focussed learning centre). The town has its own high school, Dannevirke High School, which has international and rural New Zealand students, and there is a private Christian school for children aged 5–18 years, which is popular. Most of the main religious denominations are represented in Dannevirke.
Housing is available in a wide variety of forms, from small cottages to large family homes. Several lifestyle blocks are being developed on the outskirts of the town. These typically have larger homes and 2–8 acres of land.
