Bulls is small town situated in a thriving farming area in the Rangitikei District at the junction of State Highways 1 and 3 about 160 kilometres north of the Capital city - Wellington. Bulls has easy access to many of Rangitiki’s great attractions. Being so close to town’s with great shopping, mountains, rivers, beaches and beautiful forest makes this place a great location.

This spot for many is a traditional stopping place to take advantage of the multitude of cafes, eateries, antique and quaint shops. It’s a fantastic place to take a break if travelling north to Mount Taranaki or inland along the desert road to Lake Taupo!

Bulls is the closest town to Royal New Zealand Air Force Base Ohakea, which has an interesting museum with flight simulators, videos, historical displays, an aviation shop and a café, also a lot of the airmen from the Air force Base choose to live in Bulls.

The town is named after James Bull, who founded the town in 1858 and in 1862 owned the first general store there. James went onto build many more community buildings. Originally Bulls was called Rangitikei however in 1872 this was changed to "Bulls" in recognition of James Bulls' contribution to the town.

The Bulls Township is very hard to miss, as it has a brightly coloured cluster of businesses around the intersection of SH1 and SH3. The people of Bulls have embraced the fun side of their town name while capitalising on its innate tourist appeal. Hence you will find a colourful painting of a “consta-bull” on the front of the police station, a cartoon of two “responsi-bulls” on the trash receptacles around town, and a giant wooden “cura-bull” in front of the town’s medical centre.

Bulls is also known for hosting events “The Running of the Bulls” and the “Wear-a-Bull Arts” show. Another great attraction is the excellent accessibility of both sides of the bridge of the Rangitikei River where the area is suitable for swimming, picnics, walking, running, mountain bike riding, canoeing, horse riding and jetboating.
